The organisation of the first edition of Picha – Rencontres de l’image in Lubumbashi, from 13th to 22nd June, is the result of research and creative work that was started in 2004 through the French-speaking cultural region. It is aimed at safeguarding a photographic collection of 20,000 negatives covering the history of the city and the region between 1904 and 1980. It is also planned to produce photographic and video evidence of the urban area and industrial wasteland, as well as photo and film reports on Katangan ethnography as seen by young Congolese. The recent prizes won by the photographers Sammy Baloji and Gulda el Magambo are proof of the recognition of this dynamic.
